Nm - Terroir

Fazenda Rio Brilhante is located in the region ofPantano, part of the Cerrado Mineiro.

The terroir is characterized by well-defined seasons, regular rainfall and a climate favorable to coffee production. These conditions are particularly conducive to the production of natural coffees, which represent approximately80% of the farm's production.

Fazenda Rio Brilhante benefits from soilsclayey and sandy, with an average temperature of 22°C and 1,500 mm of annual rainfall, which creates optimal growing conditions for the farm's main cultivars: Bourbon, Catuaí, Catucaí, Topázio and Arara.

Nm - Producer

The farm was founded in the 1900s1980byInácio Urban,a German from Rio Grande do Sul. Inácio first planted 20 hectares of coffee to familiarize himself with the crop, and then gradually expanded the farm over the past forty years. His children,Erika and Fernando Urban, joined the family business in2006, followed later by his son-in-law,NoahTheir participation has helped ensure continuity and innovation in the farm's activities.

Fazenda Rio Brilhante's commitment to quality and sustainable practices has been widely recognized.2017, the farm ranked second in the competitionImaflora Rainforest Allianceand third in the regional competition Cerrado Mineiro.

In2020, it received first place in the Ethics and Traceability Award for its dedication to environmental preservation, responsible agribusiness, and the development of agricultural teams. Today, Fazenda Rio Brilhante continues to make Brazilian coffees shine internationally.

The exploitation extends over2,600 hectares, of which 1,650 hectares are dedicated to coffee cultivation. This area is divided into 45 distinct sections, each with unique terroirs and microclimates.

Large trees, such as grevillea, mahogany, annatto, and casuarina, serve as natural separators, protecting the coffee plants from the frequent winds of the flat Pantano landscape and helping to preserve the farm's biodiversity.

In accordance with regional law,20% of the landremain a forest reserve with native vegetation.

Nf - Varieties

This coffee comes from 3 varieties:

  • THEYellow Bourbon: originating from Reunion Island, where the plant was first transported by the French in1715. It was then introduced to Brazil around1860. Due to its low to medium yields and relative susceptibility to leaf rust, growing yellow Bourbon requires a lot of care. In the cup, it produces a very sweet and rounded coffee.

  • THETopazio:a cross between Mundo Novo and yellow catuai, first selected at the IAC (Instituto Agronomico de Campinas) in the 1960s and later adopted in the Minas Gerais region. The coffee trees are small and compact, with good productivity but are not very
disease-resistant. The cherries ripen and turn a dark yellow, hence its name, which recalls the semi-precious stone.

  • THEYellow Catuai: the most common variety in this region, it is attractive for its resistance to heat and disease, and its ability to deliver its full potential in the cup in arid conditions. In the cup, a very fruity coffee with concentrated aromas.

Nm - Treatment process

This is the processnatural(or dry route) : coffee cherries are not pulped before drying.

Letting the cherry pulp dry in the sun with the grain brings fruity notes and more body to the cup than the washed process.
