Why buy coffee beans?

Sales of espresso machines with integrated grinders have largely surpassed sales of capsule machines for private individuals, after many years of the latter's hegemony. Because the public knows better: it is much better to buy your coffee in bean form, and here's why:

Responsibility - n.f.

Generally speaking, large packaging allows for less use of packaging and is more advantageous from this point of view, provided that half of the purchased food package is not thrown away if it expires. Thus, an aluminum capsule contains 5 grams of coffee for 2 grams of aluminum with sometimes additional cardboard or plastic.
A bag of coffee beans generally contains 250g of coffee for 10 to 15 grams of cardboard/paper/aluminum depending on the roaster. If we only compare the weight, it's already 10 times less.

Celsius. wants to push the envelope further by offering you a bag made of 100% recyclable material (PE) and thus avoids the use of aluminum, whose extraction conditions are harmful to the environment. (learn more about our packaging choice)

Our bag is made of a single type of plastic, which allows it to be recycled more easily and not disrupt the recycling cycle. To our knowledge, bags advertised as compostable are only compostable under industrial conditions incompatible with recycling in France in 2026. We are constantly looking for the least environmental impact: if you think you know a better solution adaptable to our activity, we would be delighted to discuss it (over a coffee, of course).

We have chosen, for our 250g bags, to cover them with a cardboard case made in France, in Bugey. It's a way for us to stand out, but it is an extra packaging, admittedly. That's why we offer the bags without a case for €0.50 less.

Furthermore, in 2025 we launched micro-lots, for which we wanted to reduce the grammage, for reasons of face value. We now offer a 150g format in a bottle, which allows for excellent preservation of the bean. These bottles, especially when they are made of glass, are clearly dedicated to reuse.

Quality - n.f.

Let's take the example of an apple: in juice form, in the open air, it is very likely to oxidize more quickly than in its state as an apple picked from the tree. The same principle applies here.

Have you ever smelled the aromas of freshly ground coffee? This is a sign that a large quantity of aromas are released at that moment. Indeed, once the coffee is ground, the carbon dioxide that protected the beans from the air is released, and the coffee's contact surface with the air is much larger, leading to a rapid degradation of aromas if the coffee is not extracted quickly. It is sometimes said that 30 minutes after being ground, 90% of the aromas are lost. We believe that this short shelf life is exaggerated, but it is certain that ground coffee will degrade day after day. Moreover, even in bean form, coffee can degrade, as mentioned in our article on coffee storage.

Modularity - n.f.

The size of the grind, i.e., the bean that will be ground, is essential and specific to each consumption method. (We will delve deeper into this topic in a future article)
For example, an espresso grind must be much finer than a grind for a filter coffee.

However, when buying pre-ground coffee, it will be ground for one single method. Your coffee beans are versatile. Equip yourself with a coffee grinder to grind on demand and enjoy the full potential of your coffee, depending on the time of day and your desires. We give you advice in this article dedicated to grinders.

Celsius. therefore advises you to order your coffee in beans for the reasons mentioned above. Nevertheless, if you do not have the necessary equipment to grind the beans yourself, we offer you the possibility of ordering your specialty coffee ground, on demand and according to your preferred method.
